Residential

These are examples of design studies for a commission to design a country house set into a hill. SketchUp software was used to quickly generate these ideas. The clarity of presenting ideas in 3-D truly helps our clients see the resulting scheme and enables them to react and easily determine whether the scheme accomplishes what they have in mind . . .

Prairie Style:  Walk-Out
Dundas, Minnesota

These are a series of design studies for a client interested in building a residence on a sloping site.

This study looked at a walk-out configuration which opened up to the views available to the site.

The broad overhangs, natural siding, and stone fireplace chimney along with the horizontal banding of the trim helps to communicate the chosen style for this prairie style design theme.

Arts & Crafts:  Walk-Out
Dundas, Minnesota

This design scheme takes the same walk-out floor plan and section and adjusts the roof profile, siding treatment and color to communicate the arts and crafts tone. Roof soffit brackets are added for character. Stone is introduced to the lower level to create a base for the lighter feeling wood to sit upon. The same floor plan shown above applies.

Arts & Crafts:  Slab-On-Grade
Dundas, Minnesota

This scheme took the arts and crafts theme and applied it to a single story solution. Note the alternative dormer treatment proposed, as well. The client was looking to create a single story design to enable better accessibility for their aging parent. The interior plan layout, shown later, also shows the flexibility the plan offers to adapt to the changing demands on the house over time. Designing for flexibility and adaptability is a cornerstone of sustainable design as it anticipates changing requirements and allows for adjustments to the house and needs evolve.

Prairie Style:  Slab-On-Grade
Dundas, Minnesota

This is the final approved design. It is all on one level, utilizes the prairie style and goes back to the original scheme for design execution. In an ironic twist the client decided at the last moment to purchase an existing home in town, following my continued recommendation, as a response to realizing the most value for their building investment. Thus this design wasn't built, but the planning exercise of looking at alternatives enabled the client to made a well reasoned and informed decision to move forward in a different direction.

The floor plan shown at the left embodies the type of flexibility and adaptability mention earlier. With everything on one level, the house would age gracefully with the client and allow them to live independently for many years to come.

Rebuilding Your Home - Quickly and Affordably
1920's vintage dwelling

How many times have you thought about a change to, say, your Kitchen, Garage, Second Floor, Bedroom Suite or Bath only to be twarted by uncertainty about:  "How will it look?" or "Will this even work?"

Rebuilding with REBUILD STUDIO | LLC lets you visualize in 3D what your Kitchen (or Bath, etc.) could look like if the changes you're contemplating were realized. The beauty of it is - no tear down or wall demo is required . . . just "what if"-ing. You decide with minimal invested "how to" and "whether to" proceed.

This house - on the market at the time of the study - organizes simply around a central stair and entry. With those features cordoning off the center fifth of the plan, one side is the Living Room and the other side is split between the Kitchen and the Dining Room.

Of course, there is currently a wall (non-load bearing) between the Kitchen and the Dining Room, which when removed opens that side of the plan to a compemporary Kitchen with a very functional sit-up bar and plenty of room for today's modern families. There's even a beautiful vintage window above the sink location for plenty of eastern, natural daylight and house plants, if you like.

These are more examples of renovation concepts shown in SketchUp in 3-D form to help communicate the ideas at work before any hammer pulls a nail or board is shown . . .

Sometimes what is needed isn't an "addition" at all but instead a "subtraction". In this case interior walls were removed and a new elegantly detailed stair railing system was purposed. The combination of clean aluminum and richly finished wood, set this concept apart from the ordinary.

That same detail was used in an adjacent screen wall that acted as a room activity divider yet provided for a visual connection through to the kitchen.

Again, by utilizing the communication capacity of 3-D modeling, the ideas are clearly communicated and decisions can be made without any dust and with little expense. This is the way to plan and consider the alternatives.

Contact us about your current living space, and we will be happy to listen and discuss the alternatives with you. In no time at all you will be looking at ideas that will give your home a whole new outlook.
